Awareness Beyond Identity: Meeting the Self Before the Stories

Who Am I, When Identity Falls Away?
For so long, I tried to build a self—one that made sense, that felt solid, that would finally make me safe. When I first came across advaita teachings and the idea of awareness beyond identity, I balked. It sounded like erasing myself. What about my wounds, my history, the careful boundaries I had built to survive?
The suggestion that there might be something more fundamental than identity—a direct experience of non-dual awareness—felt almost threatening. If 'I' disappear, is there anyone left to care? Some traditions describe this background awareness in the language of observer self concept, where what remains is a quiet witnessing that doesn’t judge or cling.
A Memory: The Moment Identity Cracked
I remember one afternoon, sitting in meditation with the hope that I’d just feel a bit better. It was unseasonably cold. My mind ran through its usual inventory: Am I healing fast enough? Am I doing this right? Slowly, as I let the questions pass by, something shifted. I realized there was a quiet awareness noticing the tension, the fear, even the need to be 'someone.' But here’s what I’ve come to trust: you don’t stabilize non-dual awareness by force.

Body Memories and Tender Boundaries
If you carry trauma (and many of us do), the invitation to go 'beyond self' can feel dangerous, or even triggering. My body remembered times when being formless meant being powerless or unseen. I learned that I could let the old protections soften only as much as my nervous system allowed. Sometimes, the most honest practice is to honor those boundaries and let awareness come closer at its own pace. You are not failing if you need to hold on to your story a little longer—and in fact, remembering that You are not your thoughts might free up just enough space to rest in your own experience.
If This Feels Out of Reach
You don’t have to chase non-dual awareness. If the teachings of advaita and direct experience feel too distant, that’s perfectly allowed. Sometimes, the most honest thing we can do is stay with the part of us that wants an answer, or a sense of safety. If it feels right, notice that the questioning itself is held in awareness—the longing, the disbelief, all of it.
Science hints that our sense of self is both constructed and fluid—neurons mapping new stories every day. If the pull to understand is strong, you might find it grounding to explore what consciousness is and how its nature is still a mystery even to science.
